Why SEO is worth the wait.

Search is the only channel where the customer starts the conversation. It is also the slowest thing in marketing, which is why so many businesses give up two months before it would have worked.

Search is where people go having already decided.

Somebody scrolling social media is not looking for you. Somebody typing your service plus their town has already decided they need it and is choosing who to call.

That is the whole reason search matters more than its share of a marketing budget suggests. It is the only channel where the customer starts the conversation.

Search compounds. Ads do not.

Paid advertising stops the day you stop paying. Search rankings you build keep working while you sleep, and each month of consistent work makes the next month easier.

That is not an argument against ads — ads are the right call when the maths works and when you need something today. It is an argument for owning something as well as renting it.

What the compounding looks like.

Slow, then not slow. Here is a real shape, from a practice starting with a brand-new website:

The first client arrived inside six weeks, because a working site and correct listings move quickly. The search curve did not lift at all for nearly two months after that. Then it climbed, and kept climbing every month for the rest of the year.

Twelve months in: 1,180 clicks from Google, 41,200 impressions, 1,590 keywords ranking, 483 of them in first place. From nothing.

A second client — an established site rather than a new one — went from about 1,000 clicks a year to 7,120, and from 1,400 ranking keywords to 14,500. That one took fourteen months and a change of platform.

Both sets of numbers are published in full, including what they do not prove.

Visibility is not one place any more.

Being findable used to mean ranking on a page of blue links. Now the same search can produce a map, an AI-written summary, a set of questions, and only then the results.

The map

For local searches, three map results appear before any website does. If you are not one of them you are competing for attention that has already been spent. The listing is free to set up — worth doing as soon as the pages it will point at are ready.

AI answers

More people now get an answer from a summary than from clicking. Getting into those answers overlaps almost entirely with good SEO — clear writing that answers the question directly, and structured data that describes your business in a form a machine can read.

Your own reviews

Whatever route someone takes to find you, most of them look at your reviews before they call. That is visibility too, and it is the part you influence by asking at the right moment.

The honest version.

SEO is slow, and the engines keep moving. The only thing that holds up over time is original writing meant for people, and there is no shortcut around that.

If you need customers this month, run ads and fix your listing — both move faster. Start the search work at the same time, because in six months you will wish you had.

What that work involves and what it costs.
