Choosing an agency · North Shore, MA

Why hiring a local marketing agency near you is usually the smarter move.

Most of the agencies ranking for your town have never been to it. That is an opportunity as much as a warning — and it is worth knowing what proximity actually buys you before you pay for it.

Search your own town and look at who comes up.

Type your service plus your town into Google. Look past the map at the websites underneath, and click a few.

On the North Shore, a lot of what appears is not from around here. There are agencies in Pennsylvania and Florida ranking for Beverly, running the same page template across five hundred towns with the name swapped out. One of them describes the digital landscape of the Middle East on its Beverly page, because nobody proofread the five hundredth version.

Those pages rank because they are technically fine and because most local businesses have not built anything to compete with. They are also the reason the search results in your town are easier to win than they look.

What proximity actually buys you

Not sentiment. Three practical things.

They know which towns matter. Someone who has driven Route 1A knows that a customer in Marblehead will not go to Lynn for some things and will for others. That knowledge changes which pages get built and which towns get named.

They can see the SERP you see. Search results are personalized by location. An agency two states away is looking at a different page than your customer is.

You can reach a person. Not a ticket, not an account manager relaying your question to a team you never meet.

What "local" should not mean.

There are agencies down the road that are wrong for you, and agencies three states away that are excellent. Proximity alone is not a qualification.

What matters is whether they can answer these:

Can they show you real numbers?

Not a case study written as a story. Search Console figures, with the period and the starting point. If a result was growth from zero on a new site, that should be said, because it is a different achievement from moving an established site.

Will they tell you what not to do?

Paid ads make no sense for some margins. Some businesses are better served by a template website. An agency that says yes to everything is selling, not advising.

Do they talk in plain language?

You should get a monthly report you can actually read — what moved, what didn't, what happens next. If an explanation needs jargon to sound impressive, ask what it means and watch what happens.

Who does the work?

Ask directly. In a lot of agencies the person who sold you the contract is not the person doing the work, and the work is done by whoever is free that month.

The size question.

A large agency has more people and more process. A smaller one gives you continuity — the same people on your account from one month to the next, rather than whoever is free.

For a business spending a few thousand a month, the large agency puts you at the bottom of a client list. For a business spending a great deal more, an agency with nobody behind the owner is a genuine risk — ask who covers the account when they are away.

Be honest about which you are. If you are a dental practice, a contractor, a salon or a professional practice on the North Shore, you are almost certainly better served by someone small enough that you are not the smallest account they have.

What to do this week.

Search your service plus your town. Open the top five websites that are not maps. See how many of them are actually near you, and how many are running a template.

Then look at your own site the same way, as a stranger would. That comparison is the whole brief.
